- AKASHI CHIJIMI Silk, The touch feels like “Cicada’s wings”
Akashi Chijimi textile technique was originally started in Akashi, Hyogo prefecture, more than 400 years ago. The technique of weaving extra-twisted weft silk threads, producing the light and see-through crepe silk fabric, was invented by the daughter of the shipbuilder, called Okiku, which have required consistent trial and error with great efforts through the long development, finally inherited in Tokamachi, Nigata prefecture.
The silk texture is extremely light and thin, which is well-known to be metaphorically called as “cicada’s wings”. Now the technique was inherited only by two weavers in the snowy region.
The wavy see-through texture is woven by using the unique wavy reed. This reed was also a handcrafted artisanal item. The weaver said that it might not be able to reproduce and repair it once broken, because today no artisans exist and because of the cost of making it.
The technique is registered as a Japanese traditional craft by the government, and introduced in the YouTube video as well.
We also stocked the other pattern woven type. Instead of having the wavy effect, these bolts have elegant ikat Kasuri pattern.
The texture is extremely light and beautiful, and has the elegant way of see-through.
Akashi Chijimi Kimono is still beloved by Kimono weavers. While the production number is very low, they are longing to have it for a beautiful summer Kimono, as well as a summer light Kimono coat.
